Aberrant by Ruth Silver

Title: Aberrant
Author: Ruth Silver
Publication date: April 28th 2013 (paperback)
Genre: YA Dystopian

Synopsis from Goodreads:
In the future Dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence. Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen." The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.
With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay. Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands. Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

One of my favorite genres is dystopian so I was thrilled when Ruth sent me a copy of Aberrant to read and review. Aberrant is the first in a trilogy.

The government matches up couples in the graduating class. Olivia is thrilled to be matched with her friend Joshua. She is looking forward to her new life when she is arrested. She is arrested because she was born the old fashioned way instead of in a lab. Joshua helps her escape jail.

Cabal is a pretty scary place. I cannot imagine being required to marry a person that the government chooses for me and having to follow a bunch of rules. Of course, if you follow the rules, life is ok. But if you don't, the punishment is fast.

Without giving away anymore of the plot, I thought that Aberrant was a well developed novel but not terribly original. The pacing was good and there was quite a bit of action. A few twists that weren't expected.

Olivia was a bit annoying at points but generally was well developed, as was Joshua. I'm looking forward to reading more about them in book #2.

3/5 solid book with lots of potential in upcoming books

Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi - Thoughts

Title: Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) (Goodreads)
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Pages: 461
Genre: YA, Dystopian
Rating: Awesome!

I finished the first book in this series (Goodreads) on December 31st of last year. It's how I rang in the new year, pretty much. I really enjoyed it and couldn't wait to read this second in the series.

Juliette is living and training at Omega Point. Adam is learning things about himself and is adjusting to his new life. The Reestablishment isn't going anywhere but will a war really happen? Warner is still hunting Juliette and will stop at nothing to find her. And Kenji is more of a focus this time around. I adore him. He's one of the best characters in the book. Hot, funny and loyal besides being incredibly talented and smart.

First, the cover. To die for. Such a great cover and I am so glad they redesigned the first one too. I like the redesign much better!

                          Before                                                    After

Writing style: I love the way they are written. The cross outs and repetition shows where Juliette's mind is. She is well developed as a character and we get to know her even more in this book. I wish she would stop with all the whining and wondering if she is a "monster" though. Give it a rest already!

I know that some readers have jumped ship from "Team Adam" to "Team Warner" and as glad as I am to see a bit into Warner's past, I am just not sold. Sorry. Adam tries so hard and he puts up with so much from Juliette that I kind of want to shake him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian and romance. The romance was pretty heavy in this one. Well written, great characters and Kenji. Have I mentioned him?

Your turn...have you read this? What did you think?

Legend by Marie Lu - Thoughts

Title: Legend (1st in series)
Author: Marie Lu
Pages: 305
Genre: YA dystopian
Source: library loan
Rating: Sign me up for the second one now!

I have read a few reviews on this one and they have always been really positive. I am a huge fan of dystopian and young adult dystopian is even better. I always go into these with a bit of fear though. Fear that it isn't really dystopian or that the world building will fall flat or that it will be so "out there" that it will leave me scratching my head.

A quick summary of the story is that 15 year old June is a military prodigy that is born into one of the wealthiest districts in a dystopian Los Angeles. Day is a 15 year old that was born into the slums and is the country's most wanted criminal. When June's brother is murdered, she  goes on the hunt to find his killer and crosses paths with Day. But things are not as they seem and June and Day will have to form an uneasy alliance to find out the truth.

This one was awesome! A bit slow to start for me but it picked up quickly. The world building was superb and I loved that I felt like I was walking around in their world. The world of June and the world of Day was shown in such stark contrast and I enjoyed how multi-layered the worlds were.

There was romance but it wasn't an insta-love type of thing and it worked well within the story. June was a smart and smarty pants girl who knew what she knew and she knew how to handle herself. I love a female lead that can kick butt.

Day was a bit of a typical hot male character but he was also so well developed that I was able to look past that. He also was a kick butt character that didn't take June's crap. That I really loved.

Lots of action, twists and turns and great, believable dialogue made this one a winner for me. I would recommend it to all fans of dystopian fiction. Can't wait to read the second in the series!

Consider yourself {dystopian} challenged!

I hate to even call this a challenge because I love reading dystopian so much that this should be easy. A challenge that I can actually complete! For all the details and to sign up visit Blog of Erised or click the banner above.

I plan to complete the Leader level (19+ books). What challenges are you participating in? What should I join? Do share!
