Armchair BEA - Children's, MG and YA book love
Today's Armchair BEA topic is the broad genre of children's literature. Even if you don't have kids of your own, there are such well written books out there in all the sub-genres of children's books.
Picture Books:
As mom to two little boys, ages 4 and 6, we read many, many picture and chapter books. A few of our favorites are The Giving Tree, How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, any of the Clifford the Big Red Dog books among many others. For a while we reviewed a favorite book every Sunday in my The Kiddie Table feature. The boys enjoy giving their thoughts on books almost as much as I do!
Middle Grade:
I am just now getting into MG. The only book I've read is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Was concerned that the age group would make me bored but that's not the case at all. I asked for recommendations on Twitter and got some great ideas.
Young Adult:
YA is one of my favorite genres since I started book blogging. They are action packed, well written and quick reads. Quick reads = more reviews for my blog. My favorite three this year are Shadow and Bone, The Tragedy Paper and Being Henry David. Most of what I read tends to be YA now because I enjoy it so much.
Have a recommendation for a good MG or YA? Leave it in the comments or here.

Shadow and Bone is on my pile. I've read quite a few recommendations for Being Henry David.
ReplyDeleteShadow and Bone will probably end up being my favorite read of the whole year. Being Henry David was really good too. I enjoyed all the Walden references.
DeleteBeing Henry David!! I LOVED it too! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd the author is super sweet at Twitter. I was lucky enough to win an autographed copy of it too!
DeleteI started Shadow and Bone recently but had to set it aside almost immediately because of review books... I want to get back to it so badly!! From what I've read, I think I'm going to love it.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Being Henry David, but haven't read it. It's definitely on my TBR list though, it sounds really good.
Aah, get back to it when you can. I was surprised at how much I loved it. The Darkling is my future husband. ;-)
DeleteI'm totally adding How Dinosaurs Say Goodnight to my library list. I think my 3-year-old will be over the moon.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least 2 other books in the series. My boys love them all but that one is our favorite.
DeleteOh my gosh, I loved The Tragedy Paper. What a great book!
ReplyDeleteI love it so much! I've read some pretty bad reviews of it but I didn't noticed anything that bothered others about it. So funny to me how we all read and review so differently!
DeleteI haven't read The Tragedy Paper! I'll have to check it out!I can't recommend Perks of Being a Wallflower enough for YA. I don't read much MG at all. I just finished a good YA book called Imposter by Susanne Winnacker! Being Henry David looks really good, I've seen that one around before.
ReplyDeleteSpeak by Laurie Halse Anderson was a great YA book to, can't recommend that enough.
Blink Once by Cylin Busby is another YA book I think you'd like. I loved it!
happy reading, and thanks for dropping by my blog :D

Oh yes, Speak was amazing. I read it a few years ago and still can remember it. Thanks for the recommendations! I'll have to look them up ;-)
DeleteI haven't yet read Percy Jackson or Shadow and Bone (I have the UK edition which is called The Gathering Dark) but I have copies so now I just need time! I hadn't heard of Being Henry David before.
ReplyDeleteOooh, I love UK versions of books. Back when I had money to spend on books, I went through a phase of buying UK stuff instead of the US version ;-) I hope you like both of them as much as I did. Being Henry David is one I'd recommend trying to get too. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Interesting story with really great characters.
DeleteAfter feeling like the last person who hadn't read the Percy Jackson books, I borrowed The Lightning Thief from my cousin and loved it. I really have to get back to that series and read the rest of the books. I spotted The Tragedy Paper the last time I was at the library, and of course it was one of the times when I didn't have my card with me (left it home to avoid borrowing more books before finishing the ones I already had out). I really want to read it!
ReplyDeleteOh Lee, I need to leave my card at home so I won't check anything out either. Only problem with that is the staff knows me so I don't have to have it...they'd just look it up by my last name. We visited a different branch yesterday and I got 15 off the new release shelf. Said we needed to leave fast! LOL I'd done enough damage in too little of a time. ;-)
Deleteyou bring back memories for me when I was pregnant with my son I read him how do dinosaurs say goodnight every night and when he was born he use to settle with it. great post
ReplyDeleteJodie @ Aussie Bookworm
It really is one of our favorites to read. I sometimes dislike ones they love but that one we all agree on! That's sweet about your son calming down when you read it to him. Great memories
DeleteDon't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus! by Mo Willems is my favorite kids book. There is a whole series. My son and I LOVE them! Have you read them yet?
ReplyDeleteMy bloggy friend, Steph suggested them to us a couple of years ago. I find them silly and thankfully so do my boys. Nothing worse than hating a book that they want me to read over and over. We've gotten some great ideas this week though!
DeleteGlad you guys like them. I like reading silly kids books and there are great lessons embedded in the pigeon series! Win-win!
DeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed the Percy Jackson series! Let me know what you think of the Lost Heroes series by him too!
