Quirky Fall Holiday = Reading

Today is a quirky fall holiday for my boys so I am using the day off to read, visit some blogs and enjoy our day.

Currently reading:

This is a buddy read with Caz at Little Book Owl. I tried this one when it first came out but put it aside pretty quickly for some reason. Enjoying it so far. Jay Kristoff's writing is gorgeous. Looking forward to getting a big chunk of this one finished today.

Top Ten Tuesday - Books On My Fall 2018 TBR

This week's theme for Top Ten Tuesday is books on my fall 2018 TBR. I am such a mood reader that I don't do well with TBR lists but there are some books that I would like to read before the end of the year.

Have had this one on my list for a while. When the movie was announced, it made me want to read it. Since I heard the movie bombed, it was pushed down the list again. Still want to get it this year though.

I have had this one on my bedside table for a ridiculous amount of time. I am not sure what is keeping me from reading it. What makes it worse is I purchased the 3rd book too. So they are both side eyeing me.

She is the author of one of my all time favorite series. I have heard mixed things about this one recently from readers with my same tastes so I don't know how much I will end up enjoying this one.

Tried this one when it first came out and put it aside. Little Book Owl is doing a read-along for it though so I want to try it again.

Another Little Book Owl read-along. Another one that I tried when it first came out. This one was so beautifully written that I wanted to savor every word. Since I had quite a few books checked out from the library at the time, I set this one aside to get to later.

One of my real life friends recommended this series to me. Sounds like my kind of reading!

Spotted this one at the bookstore and thought it sounded good. Put it on reserve at the library and it has taken forever to get. Apparently every one else thinks it looks good too.

I am horrified that I haven't read this one yet! I loved the first and have enjoyed all of Victoria Schwab's books that I have read. Need to reread the first one to refresh my memory and then dive into this one.

READERS IMBIBING PERIL XIII (R.I.P.)

Readers Imbibing Peril started earlier this month and runs through October 31st. The purpose is to read books that could be considered: mystery, suspense, thriller, dark fantasy, gothic, horror or supernatural. There is also a section for movies! The goals are simple: have fun reading and share that fun with others.

This is my first time officially participating even though I have followed along for a couple of years.

I think that I will keep my options open and NOT pick a TBR for this. Instead, I will update as I read towards the challenge. I would like to read 4 books to complete this.

Book Club Pick - News of the World by Paulette Jiles

Title:  News of the World
Author: Paulette Jiles
Pages: 203
Rating: 3 of 5 stars
Book Club pick for September

Summary from Goodreads.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.
In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence.
In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.
Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.
Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself.

Book Club #1 picked News of the World for this month's pick. It started a bit slow but I ended up enjoying it by the end. I liked the story itself but wasn't a big fan of the writing style. I tend to find long sentences followed by super short sentences to make the reading choppy. This book is very short at just over 200 pages but it took me days to read. I was never able to find a rhythm to read it.

Captain Kidd was an interesting character but you could do a drinking game with the number of times she said his hair was white. We get it...he was old.

Overall this was a solid read.

Remember

This is the one I remember the most. America united.
