Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is top ten books dealing with tough subjects (abuse, suicide, grief, etc or something personally hard for you)
1. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - oh my. I read this one before I started blogging or really even reading bookish blogs. I don't even remember how I heard about this one but wow. Tough topic but so well written. 
2. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger - this one had a couple of personally painful scenes in it. At the time I read it, I had to put the book for a while after these scenes to regain my footing. I enjoyed it quite a bit then and wouldn't be quite as bothered by it now but it would still hurt.
3. The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman - based on the story summary, I should have known that this one would get to me but a friend of mine and I were doing a read-a-long of this one and I didn't want to let her down. A little bit of a break was needed after an incredibly heart breaking scene but this book was a good hurt that ended with hope.
4. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith - another one that I ultimately enjoyed but that hit too close to home at spots. I lived it in real life and avoid it in fiction when I know about it in advance.Ummm, it appears that I don't read many issues books or books that are personally hard for me. Apparently I avoid them very well. *shrugs*

ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I read The Time Travelers Wife. I'd like to go back and re-read it soon.
Speak was amazing. Tough but really excellent. I loved TTW but it isn't one that I'd re-read I don't think. I thought that it was one that I owed but after looking at my shelves and not finding it, I guess I gave it away.
DeleteI had a hard time coming up with my list. I find I kind of avoid issue books as well!

DeleteThe Time Traveler's Wife was emotionally hard to get through for me too. I LOVED it, but it also made me cry :(

Yep, it was great but there were a couple of places that I just couldn't! It's light but there is a issue in there that is particularly hard for me to read. I enjoyed it though!

DeleteSpeak was heart breaking but so well written! I read it years ago and I still remember it clearly. Usually I forget books pretty fast.

ReplyDeleteWasn't it? I really enjoyed it, even more than I expected. Been a while since I read The Time Traveler's Wife but I remember how much I liked it overall.
