Armchair BEA Classics

Today, tell us all the reasons why you love classic literature. What are your favorite classics? If you could give a list of classics to someone who claims to hate them to make them change their mind, what would be on it? How would you convince them to give classics a try? And why do you keep coming back to those old favorites?

So, classics fans, here’s your chance and your day to discuss your favorites and find new classic loving friends.

I should probably feel a bit of embarrassment that I was an English lit major in college and yet I don't really enjoy that many classics. I am easily swayed to the shiny new cover over the classics. The language is also different from now so it takes me even longer to read. I'm already a slow reader so I hate to add additional time.

Jane Eyre is probably my favorite classic book.

Do you read classics? If so, what is your favorite?

  1. I want to and I have a few on my shelf sitting waiting for me, but I agree that the language difference is annoying. Especially when you have to keep flipping to the back of the book to look up words. My favorite is Pride and Prejudice. I want to read Jane Eyre one day, but there's so many good new releases i want to read more lol

    1. I've never read an Austen {ducks behind shelf in shame} but I have Price and Prejudice on my shelf. I should read that one soon since you love it so much. That's exactly right...too many new releases that I'd rather read than the classics too! ;-)

  2. Like I said in my other comment, I love The Count of Monte Cristo. It's probably my favorite classics and I highly recommend it. Esp. if you like revenge stories.
    Other classics I loved:
Pride and Prejudice, but who doesn't love that book??
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov - magic&black humor&the Devil- <33333

    1. Another vote for Pride and Prejudice! So many people love that one. I'm going to have to get The Count of Monte Cristo too if you like it that much.

    1. Good ones! I've never read Wizard of Oz but I'm pretty sure I read The Secret Garden when I was a kid. All this talk of classics makes me want to pick some up!

  4. My English Lit courses were all over the board so I didn't need to focus on "classics" at all. I had English as a major because I was planning to attend law school. I needed an undergraduate degree that I would enjoy and excel at and something that I could use if I needed. I could teach English, I have editing and proofreading skills, etc.

  5. I don't read many classics (especially not the Dutch ones, since those are quite boring to me :p) but Jane Eyre is definitely one of my favorite stories!

    1. After reading about all the classics this week, I really want to at least give them a try. Everyone keeps talking about Pride and Prejudice and I have that one on my shelf. Going to try it soon.

  6. Ah, okay. I'm always surprised to hear that people went after an English degree when they didn't really like the type of reading that's bound to come with it. That makes sense, though - I actually began law school after college but decided (after attending orientation) that it just was not going to be for me. They love English majors, though, because professional, analytical writing is so important.

  7. I don't read a lot of Classics. I trying to talk myself into reading The Count of Monte Cristo.

I recently read Dracula and liked to my surprise. Armchair BEA Discussion: Classic Literature Pt. 1 (Dracula) http://www.madhoydenish.blogspot.com/2013/05/armchair-bea-classic-literature-pt-1.html

    1. I just had someone recommend The Count of Monte Cristo. Maybe we could do a read a long of it? I don't read a lot of them but I want to read more.
